Advent Day 14: Plowshares

As I continue to wonder at the Prince of Peace, I’m struck by an image from Isaiah.

He says that the nations will surrender their weapons of war and turn them into tools for cultivating the land.

“They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” -Isaiah 2:4

Can you imagine the social implications of such a kingdom as this?

But over and over again, The Prince of Peace models the way of vulnerability.

The infant king.

The suffering servant.

The weapon-less warrior who defeats and overcomes death by first submitting to it.

We’re faced with a choice. We can fight to make this kingdom a present reality. Or we can offer vague sentimentalities like “thoughts and prayers.”

Not that prayer isn’t worthwhile, but my prayer is this, “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Which apparently looks less like swords, and more like plowshares.
