Advent Day 5: Hope

“Don’t get your hopes up.” We hear it. We say it. It’s the anthem of the pessimists.

But it’s bad advice, at least during Advent anyways.

We live in a world that seems to train us not to get our hopes up.

We have a continuous news cycle that almost constantly feeds us the worst news going on in the world. Our minds, bodies, and spirits were not made to hold the weight of the worst the world has to offer without respite.

Health insurance is a scam.

All insurance, probably.

(Insert your gripe with humanity here.)

There is no shortage of things with which we could be tempted to despair.

It would be easier for us to just simply not get our hopes up.

But imagine with me for a minute- what would it look like to hope unguardedly?

Advent teaches us to set our hopes high; to get our hopes up. Belligerently so, even.

Will you be vulnerable and hope unguardedly?
_____

Chains shall he break,
For the slave is our brother,
And in his name,
All oppression shall cease.
